日本の野球
野球は日本でもっとも人気のあるスポーツです。 もっとも世界ではそれほどメジャーなスポーツではないですが・・・。 1871年にアメリカからベースボールが伝わった当初は、アマチュアだけのスポーツでした。 ２０世紀初頭に最初のプロチームができてから、野球は人気のあるスポーツとなりました。
アメリカ人にとっては、ＮＰＢ（日本プロ野球）を見て、メジャーリーグベースボールと比べて見るのは面白いでしょう。 ＮＰＢのシーズンは３月末から１０月下旬までです。 ２リーグ制（セントラルリーグ、パシフィックリーグ）で全部で１２チームあります。 主にそれぞれのホームグラウンドである札幌、仙台、東京、横浜、千葉、名古屋、大阪、西宮、神戸、広島、福岡で試合を見ることができます。 チケットは、1,000円から6,000円ぐらいで座席の場所によって異なります。
プロフェッショナルチーム同様、アマチュア野球も人気スポーツの一つです。特に高校野球が大好きな人もいます。毎年３月と８月に西宮市の甲子園球場において、全国高校野球選手権大会が行われます。日本人にとって、ある種恒例イベントとなっていて、トーナメント期間中は、６万席のスタジアムが観客で埋め尽くされ、皆地元のチームを応援します。この期間に大阪か京都に滞在されているなら、是非スタジアムに行ってみてはどうでしょう。

Baseball (Yakyu in Japanese) is the most popular sport in Japan, though it is not a major sport in the world.
Since baseball was imported from USA in 1871, it was played as an amateur sport. After the first professional team started in the early 20th century, baseball became a popular national sport.
For Americans, it would be interesting to watch a NPB (Nippon Professional Baseball) game and compare the difference between Major League Baseball. The season of NPB games are from the end of March to late October. There are 12 teams in 2 leagues (Central League and Pacific League). You can see the games mainly in their home ground of Sapporo, Sendai, Tokyo, Yokohama, Chiba, Nagoya, Osaka, Nishinomiya, Kobe, Hiroshima and Fukuoka). A ticket costs around 1,000 yen to 6000 dependent on the seat.
As well as professional baseball, Amateur baseball is a popular spectator sport, especially people love to watch high school baseball games (Koko-yakyu). In March and August every year, the national high school baseball championship tournament is held at Koshien Stadium in Nishinomiya City. It is something like annual event for Japanese and during the tournament period, the 60,000-seat stadium is filled with full of spectacles and they cheer for their local teams. It would be a good idea to to go to the stadium if you stay in Kyoto or Osaka during the period.
